32nd Session of the APPPC

The 32nd Session of the APPPC will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 7 to 11 November 2022. About 70 participants (both physical and virtual) are expected to participate in the Session. The meeting with discuss the progress over the past three years (2020-2022), country reports, draft six-year strategy of APPPC, among others, and also prepare the work plan for the next biennium (2023-2024). The Provisional Agenda of the 32nd Session is attached.

APPPC Regional Workshop on Development of Commodity Specific International Standards on Phytosanitary Measures (ISPMs)

Short description
This regional workshop is part of the APPPC’S biennium work programme for 2020-2021. The original proposal was to conduct this workshop in 2020, The objective was to promote the development and acceptance of international and regional commodity specific standards, and to discuss the implementation of the APPPC Regional Standard for Phytosanitary Measures (RSPM) 11 for mango. APPPC RSPM 11 for mango was adopted in 2019.

Due to the Covid-19 situation, it was agreed that the workshop would be postponed to the second quarter this year. Instead of the original proposal, we will now take into consideration ISPM 46 on commodity specific standard which was recently adopted at the CPM-16 2022 as well as an ISPM for mango (first annex to ISPM 46) to be developed based on RSPM 11.

International Day Plant Health (IDPH)(12 May 2022) - Protecting plants, protecting life

International Day Plant Health (IDPH)

 FAO plans to observe this important occasion by hosting a three-hour session on May 12, 2022. The session will include the participation of policy leaders and technical experts from around the world.

 This year’s IDPH will build on the IYPH momentum under the slogan “Protecting plants, protecting life” and linking “Plant health innovation for food security” and highlighting the 70th Anniversary of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

 The goal of the event is to continue to raise awareness of the importance of plant health for food security, environmental protection and trade facilitation, with the following six specific objectives:

o Increasing the awareness among public and policy makers of the importance to keep plants healthy to achieve the UN 2030 Agenda, and particularly SDGs 2 (Zero Hunger).

o Campaigning to minimize the risk of spreading plant pests through trade and travel.

o Triggering higher compliance with international plant health standards.

o Keeping plants healthy while protecting the environment through integrated pest management.

o Promoting investment in plant health innovations, research, capacity development and outreach; and

o Strengthening monitoring and early warning systems to protect plants and plant health.

 FAO will provide simultaneous interpretation of the event in all six UN languages.

 The FAO Office of Communication is in the process of finalizing this year’s IDPH logo and other graphic products that could be used by the IPPC community.

The pre-CPM meeting is normally organized prior to the annual session of the Commission on Phytosanitary Measures (CPM). The objectives of the APPPC pre-CPM-16 meeting to be virtually held on Tuesday, 29 March 2022 from 10:00-12:00 hours (Bangkok time) are as follows:

(a) to review, discuss, share, and consider any topics/issues related to CPM-16 agenda items, which are of high priority to our region.

(b) to strategize how to approach the agenda items to help move things forward; and to identify any issues related to our region.
